Born into an aristocratic Charleston family, Edward J. Pringle attended the South Carolina College in 1841 and transferred to Harvard, where he graduated with honors in 1845. He was admitted to the bar in 1847, but first decided to enjoy his wealth, and embarked on a two-year grand tour of Europe.
